South Africa is grappling with a renewed surge in anti-foreigner sentiment in 2026. Vigilante groups like March and March and echoes of Operation Dudula have organised protests and actions in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, and other South African cities. They have targeted African and Asian migrants in incidents bordering on violence, lootings, displacements, and deaths. Existing reports say that a number of some documented and undocumented Mozambicans, Nigerians, Malawians, and others, have been variously affected. The risks this portends for the South African economy in the future has been considered by many analysts.
