The public execution of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State on Sunday, 26th April 2026 serves as another shocking episode of police brutality in Nigeria. It looked like a movie. A man arrested, hands bound behind him, feet also tied up, several policemen asking him questions, kicking and brutalising him while he screams in pain on the ground. Then one of the officers raised his rifle and shot him, leaving him lifeless in a public place while bystanders watched and some recorded videos. The incident raises serious questions about the policing culture that produces officers who can carry out such dastardly acts publicly and still behave as though nothing serious will happen afterwards. And sometimes, nothing happens.
