When a special adviser to the Nigerian president, Tope Fasua, said that a plate of food in the United States may cost you about $10, and just $1 can give you a decent meal in Nigeria, the comparison was out of place. It failed to acknowledge that, in 18 years, food prices have risen by over 371 percent—the highest among the likes of Kenya, Indonesia, Niger, Senegal, Bangladesh, and others.
