Japanese consumers are facing an alarming development as the price of rice, a foundational element of their diet for millennia, spikes to record highs. While general inflation (CPI) has risen by a relatively manageable 8.3% over the past four years, rice prices have skyrocketed by 48.3%. In simpler terms, the price of rice has increased nearly six times faster than the general cost of living in Japan.
