A strong passport makes international travel easier, reflecting a country's global connections and diplomatic strength. In West Africa, the 2025 passport rankings show some countries have better access to global travel than others.
Cape Verde stands out in the region, offering visa-free access to 40 countries and visa-on-arrival to 36, ranking 66th globally. Ghana and Gambia follow closely, providing similar benefits for their citizens, with ranks of 67 and 68, respectively.
However, there is a clear difference between countries in the region. While Benin, Senegal, and Sierra Leone offer good travel access, Nigeria, known as the "Giant of Africa," ranks 85th globally, with visa-free access to only 27 countries.
